Changes in Germany’s Long-Distance Train Services for 2024
Changes are coming to Germany’s long-distance train services in 2024. Deutsche Bahn, the main train operator, will introduce a new timetable in December. This brings some exciting improvements, like more trains running and new overnight services, but there are also challenges ahead, like trains being late and possible price increases. Let’s break down what’s changing for travelers.
Big Changes in Train Routes:
1. Berlin to NRW Route:
- Two new ICE trains every two hours between Berlin and Cologne via Wuppertal.
- Trains from Berlin to Hanover every half hour.
- More seats available, about 20 to 25 percent more.
2. Berlin to Munich Route:
- Trains between Berlin and Munich every half hour.
- A faster connection, with one train taking only three hours and 45 minutes.
3. Night Trains:
- Austrian Railways (ÖBB) will start night trains from Berlin to Paris and Brussels, initially three times a week, then daily from October 2024.
4. Regional Services:
- New routes connecting Leipzig, Jena, and Nuremberg.
- More trains through the Saale Valley, including new ones to Magdeburg.
5. Timetables and Tickets:
- The new timetable starts on December 10th, and tickets for new services go on sale from October 11th.
- This is important for anyone traveling over Christmas.
6. Prices:
- Prices for long-distance trains might go up because of inflation.
- Deutsche Bahn will tell passengers about any price changes in October.
Challenges with Being on Time:
- Long-distance trains in Germany have had problems with being on time.
- This is because the rail network is old and often too busy, plus there’s a lot of construction.
- Last year, nearly one in three long-distance trains were delayed by at least 15 minutes.
- Starting in 2024, there will be big renovations to the rail network, starting with the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim, lasting until 2030.
- Things should improve by 2025.
As Deutsche Bahn gets ready to make these changes, passengers can expect more trains and new options. But they should also be prepared for possible delays and higher prices. It’s important to keep up to date with the timetable changes and how they might affect travel plans and costs.
